I recently set up my new macbook pro with an Apple Cinema Display. The setup is great except that my wifi connection only works when my MBP is open. The second I close the screen the connection stops working. Does anyone have any solutions for this? It's not a proximity issue since it works just fine when it's open. Appreciate the help.

MBP's go to "sleep" when the lid is closed unless an External Keyboard, Mouse, and Display are connected.

The only other way around this, is using some software that "hacks" the system.

Installing InsomniaX will prevent it from sleeping while closed.

That's the only way around it.

Or just close it with you cinema display attached, move your mouse or use your external keyboard, and it should wakeup...

I have a similar issue to the OP. Whenever I am using my MBP in clamshell mode, I get a horrible connection to wifi. However, while I am dual screening with the MBP open, I have full wifi bars.

Marty,

I have both a wireless keyboard and mouse plus my cinema display yet the MBP seems to still be sleeping. Is this a setting i need to change you think?
