WiFi greyed out and wont work any more?

Has anyone had this issue where the wifi option in settings is greyed out so you cannot turn it on at all. The techs at the apple store (where I bought my 1.4yr old 3G) said that the wifi chip is dead and I need a new phone. And...no they will not upgrade or give me any breaks. Seems to me a phone should at least last 2 years, or gasp....dare I dream... longer than 2 years!
No I have no Jailbroken aps on my phone and have tried all the normal hard and soft resets. Anyone else out there with this issue?

I had an issue where wifi wouldn't work, but the wifi wasn't greyed out.

Anyway, you can pay $199 for an out of warranty replacement.
