I have my DSL modem connected to an I-O DATA (a Japanese brand) wifi router. With these I have wifi internet access on my Macbook Air. It works fine.

In System Preferences, Network has two connections set up: my wifi router and PPPoE. I connect to my router by selecting it from the available wifi networks, then I connect the PPPoE. It works fine.

I am trying to connect a iPad to the network. On the iPad, I can join the network. The wifi icon replaces the 3G one. When I try to access the internet on the iPad, Safari (or Mail, etc.) says it doesn't have an internet connection. The same results occur when I try to connect my iPhone 3G to the network.

Am I an absolute idiot that is missing something completely obvious?

I think I solved the problem. I ordered an Airport Express (aka AirMac Express here in Japan). I'll receive Airtunes as a bonus for my trouble, yay!
