wifi on wrt54gl with ddwrt doesnt work

most of the time it doesn't even show up to my ibook but when it does the ibook fails to connect to it and it is like a foot from the ibook so it isnt distance
i tried the final of ddwrt v23 sp2 and the beta of sp3 both had the same results
ive tried with my settings and default
and when i passively scan with kismac i shows lots of activity so its not that it isnt transmitting

any ideas?
