Hi,

I have a 32GB iPhone 3GS and a few days ago, the Wifi on my home computer stopped working. I made no changed to my computer, other than I think there may have been a Microsoft auto-update.

Anyway, after scouring the internet, following all the trouble-shooting guides on wifi problems, resetting all my phone settings, resetting, restoring, etc., then checking my computer, unistalling my computer's wireless connection, re-installing it, resetting all the computer and internet settings, nothing.

Finally on a lark (I could find nothing on google about doing this, i just did it cuz there was literally no steps left to try), I disabled my Windows firewall, and viola!, screaming fast wifi back. So I'm thinking it's a specific issue with the Windows Firewall, and downloaded Online Armour Free Firefewall to see if my iPhone's wifi would work with another firewall, but no cigar. Upon installing Online Armour, the iPhone again came up with my nemesis --"can't connect to server" error message.

So my iPhone's wifi works great away from home, and even at home if my firewall is off...but I'm guessing it's not a good idea to go without a firewall (especially with the amount of porn I watch)...

Should I keep downloading and trying other free firewalls, maybe one will let my iPhone work with my computer's wifi? anyone have a guess as to the culprit?

Thanks all

I would very much like to have a Firewall, but I also want to be able to use my computer's wifi on my iPhone if I'm not in my computer room.

I set up my computer to be an ad hoc network (would that be essentially a router of sorts?) a few years ago when i first got an iPod touch. Have never had any problems with my Touch or my new iPhone accessing wifi until 4 days ago. Now my iPhone can only access my computer's wifi if I turn off the firewall.

Okay, if it happened 4 days ago, just do a system restore from prior than that. If somehow something got changed that might fix it.

THanks for the idea. I tried it..twice--once before that last windows update, and then went back a few weeks. Still nothing...but it was useful in that my settings are back where they were when everything was working. Now that I have been trying to sort this out, the proper settings are etched in my brain...so either that last microsoft update did a number on my registry, or there may be something particular with my iPhone and location (I'm an expat working in Korea, and I know they've messed with some of the location services code to prevent spouses from seeing each others' location through some apps, so I may just have to call the local service provider to solve this one).
