I recently acquired an aluminum 20" Apple Cinema Display that I planned on using with my 13 inch MBP for long studying sessions, where the extra screen size would be welcome. However, I've noticed that when I plug into the external monitor, both Safari and Chrome become so....slow..... It's a bit disheartening, considering the amount of online homework I have this semester. :( When I am not plugged into the monitor, the speed of the connection improves drastically, as opposed to near-unusable.

I'm running 10.8.1, if that helps.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that this only happens when the lid is closed. Otherwise, smooth sailing.

This has been an ongoing problem with any external display. The cause: interference. Check this thread and google around, there are a lot of threads on this topic with different solutions.

I had the same problem where I was using a non-apple branded minDisplayPort to DVI adapter. I bought an apple brand one for an extra $20 and now it workds perfectly. Hope that helps.
