I have some media stored on a 4-bay external enclosure connected to my Mac Mini through USB 3.0, which is then connected to my router by ethernet. When I watch this media using my 2012 MBP it plays just fine, but when I watch it on the 2019 it stops and starts and seems like it's buffering. The media are .wmv files and I'm using VLC to play it.
The source also has .mp4 files, I grabbed one of those and that played fine on the 16" while the same .wmv did not (over the network, still using VLC), as do files that are older. If I copy the same files to the internal storage they play fine so it seems the only variable is the wireless.
When I option-click on the WiFi icon it shows I'm connected to 802.11ac at over 1100 Mbps, my 2012 didn't have that speed so it should be BETTER on the 2019. I'm thinking it's related to 802.11ac and I'm trying to see if I can set my router (Synology RT2600ac) just use 802.11n, even to test that (or if there's a way to force the Mac to 802.11n). I could also try disabling MU-MIMO, there aren't many obstacles in my place as it's small (1,000 sq. ft., if that).
I suppose I could just download the .mp4 in the future, and could update the previous downloads in the same way, but I was hoping for a solution without significant downloading. I would have thought the newer Mac with faster WiFi capability wouldn't have this kind of issue.
