WiFi problems

I'm using a 2015 Macbook Air with 10.11.4.
For some reason I've always had sporadic wifi internet connection on this laptop.
I'm sitting in coffee shops and everyone (many on Macs) around me is on line and I have major connection problems.

However I can always connect with no problems if I use my phone as a hotspot.

Just want to go stepwize and see if there are settings that I have or don't have active that I should look at.

Any ideas?
