I have a 2011 macbook pro. We just upgraded our internet to 400 megs unlimited data on our cable internet.

I am able to get over 400 Mbps when connected via ethernet, but over wifi (even right beside the router) i only get around 280 Mbps.

The router is built into the modem and operates over two frequencies, one being 5g. The 5g is stronger but does not reach as far (right)?

Is 5g different from a/g/n etc? Does the mbp support 5g? What frequencies does it run on if not (a / g / n) etc?

What is the wifi speed limit on the wifi NIC in 2011 mbp and why can't i get the full 400 mbps (even when sitting within a foot of the router)?

You'll never get 400 megs over wireless on that MacBook.

In theory, that model has wireless N which will let you see a 'link rate' of 450mbs

However in the real world you'll only get the speeds you are seeing. Heck, it can be hard to even break 100mbs in the same room.
