Wifi Tether without Ad-Hoc?

I have been using MyWi to tether to my Macbook Air. It works great, but it's only in ad-hoc mode and not a true wireless hotspot. This method doesn't seem to work for my new e-reader.

Is there any way I can wireless tether my phone as a true hotspot? The e-reader doesn't recognize ad-hoc mode.
