So the 3G will be my 1st iPhone, I have been playing with my girlfriends for the year to calm the nerves, but will the iPhone read the wifi and use that as a connection sources to the net, or continue to run the 3g? I know Starbucks just did that free wifi deal, so I am not sure if that is relevant to all wifi??? Also the wifi would be a faster connection correct?

when available, the iPhone will use wi-fi over the 3g network.

if there are no known networks, or open wi-fi networks, then 3g will be used.

and yes generally the wi-fi connection will be faster than 3g speeds (however even old-dial up networking can be shared wirelessly, so it depends on the quality of internet connection/network speed that the wi-fi router is connected to.)

It will work the same way as the existing iPhone works. If it can access a WiFi network, then it will prefer that over EDGE. But in the case of the iPhone 3G, first it will try a WiFi network, then 3G, then EDGE. And yes, WiFi is faster than 3G.
