I have seen a few threads on this, so let's start a list of what useful WatchOS 4 apps work with LTE (and no phone connected)!

Many of these apps must be first set up with accounts on the phone but once that is done, they generally will work alone. Keep in mind too some apps didn't work until I re-paired the watch.

Works on LTE/Wifi with no iPhone connected
  • All Apple apps (weather, mail, Siri, news, etc.)
  • MyQ for Chamberlain Garage Doors
  • Watch Cam (works with Nest)
  • Canary
  • Uber
  • Nest app
  • Starbucks
  • Messenger
  • Gymaholic
  • Fit Weightlift
  • CNN
  • Flipboard
  • Apple Store
  • iTranslate
  • Shazam
  • Dataman Pro
  • Just Press Record
  • How Much?
  • Health Mate (not a network app but no errors)
  • GoPro
  • Volvo On Call

Apps that load but won't load data without iPhone connected or on same network, and are thus useless when disconnected from phone
  • Lyft (asks you to login)
  • Tweetbot ("error, watchconnectivity on paired device is not reachable")
  • ETA (stays stuck on "loading")
  • RadarScope (maps load but no radar data...)
  • Citibank ("oops! Internal error")
  • Bank of America (exclamation symbol)
  • JetBlue ("oops, can't fetch data from your phone")
Apps that get No Phone Icon:
  • Nuzzel
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Yahoo Fantasy
  • Chronicle
  • My Radar

FYI It seems that if you are using the Native Mail App still requires Phone to be on Network.

Email both Gmail, Exchange etc need to go through the phone first as thats how they are authenticated through the phone. Otherwise you would need a stand alone mail app like on the iPad and this would be a separate device with gmail, corporate email etc. maybe we will get that ability in a future upgrade.

Glad you said this... I'm still wondering why people in the forum said they were able to power there phone off and or Airplane mode and were able to retrieve and send mail.

I cannot unless my phone is up and running. Tried both Corp Exchange and Gmail with Native App.
IP6-IOS11 / ATT

***UPDATE***
I guess mine is getting returned... Was just told by Apple that the device should send and receive email with the phone turned off. If it isn't sounds like hardware.

So here is my question... is there an error on the backend somewhere as to why these apps are not working, or did Apple over deliver?

It's the apps. They are not using the proper API call for connectivity which was only added I suppose in WatchOS3. Or they are running on the watch (OS1 behavior) Watch is getting more popular and most of the watch apps are old or abandoned.

It is a matter of having to re-author or update the app.

Instagrams app is brand new and still doesn’t work. Neither does SMS. Seems more like a connectivity issue to me.

Shazam was just updated to work totally detached from the iPhone! Looks like an amazing update!!
