Wiki mail alerts not triggering

We run a OSX 10.6 server and its been running smoothly. Recently we setup a wiki.

Here we noticed there were no email alerts being made by the wiki. So we dug into the server and notice that the Mail service logs have a message

<date/time> server push_notify[79]: notification server connect failed, will retry in ...

And here everything we tried, and looked up via google did not solve the problem.

Can anyone suggest a route to getting the wiki alerts to work ?

Just for info, I am sure the mail server works because I test sent myself and email and answered back successfully.

I also checked in "Server Admin"/Web/Settings/Wiki that the relay smtp server is set right.

Finally the email accounts in Wiki for each user are defined.
