Wild loss of hard drive space

Running OS 10.6 on macbook
Problem surfaced 2 months ago with near zero disk space on hard drive
Caused significant operation problems.
Upgraded hard drive from stock unit (160 or so)to 320 GB and RAM to 3GB
New install with Snow Leopard and transfer of data.
Yesterday free space went from 145 GB to 85 MB on hard drive.
What is up?
