One RAM slot is out so I wanted to cram as much RAM as possible to the one remaining.
 
From my understanding you have one RAM slot that can't be used at all, so the usual recommended 2 x 4GB 204-pin 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SO-DIMM SDRAM configuration is not an option.

It would help if you provide the exact model of Macbook Pro, not just the year, but on face value a single 8GB RAM module might not appear to be compatible, or perhaps no one has tried it.
