The trackpad on my everyday machine (mid-2009 MBP) is no longer clicking.

I have an older 15" MBP, released in late-2008.

It's the one with the first unibody design: newer black backlight keyboard but with an easily removable battery (ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Unibody+Late+2008+and+Early+2009+Battery/819/1).

The trackpads appear visually identical from the outside. Can I take the trackpad from my old 15" and use it to replace the one in my 13"?

Try to find a local Apple authorized repair center (independent store) and see if you can get this information out of them.
