I have a friend coming back from the US with 2 Iphones, one for him and one for me. Regardless of what I do with the iphone now, will I be able to register the US iphone with the Australian carrier when it is eventually released here?

How does the firmware work? The UK Iphones will have to have a different firmware to the US ones so they check for the O2 sim instead of AT&T. Will it just be a case of loading the Australian firmware that only accepts Vodafone (for example) sim cards, going into a Vodafone store and signing up on a contract?

In short, will I be able to turn my imported Iphone into a legitimate Iphone indistinguisable from those purchased locally when it is eventually released in Australia?
