Will adding and deleting music from iTunes mess up the library?

Hey all, wonder if someone in the know could shed some light on this one.

I am going to start using iTunes to edit some MP3 tags on some old MP3's I have on my mac, I don't really want them imported into iTunes. So I am going to add them, edit the tag and remove them.

Will this mess up the library leaving behind traces etc? or am I safe to do this?
