Hello,

I have a first generation iPhone, currently running 3.0. I would like to update it to 3.1.2 but I don't know if I should. My contract recently ended with AT&T, and I did not renew. Currently it just says "no service" where it usually has the bars. I don't believe in signing any new contract that I am not 100% sure I would be able to consistently pay, so I'm perfectly content with using it as an iPod Touch of sorts right now, and just using a tracphone/skype.

Anyway, my question is, can I update this thing? Or will it try to activate it once it's done updating and see that I no longer have AT&T? Any help would be appreciated!

Yes. Updates do not require you to have a contract with any cellular provider. You don’t even need to have a SIM card in to work
