I am considering buying an External DVD drive for my Retina MacBook Pro, however, I saw that I could get many drives that are much cheaper than the Apple Superdrive?

Are there any real benefits to exclusively using a Superdrive or could I buy a <insert any brand here> drive over an Apple one?

Also, would there be any point in getting a Blu-Ray drive? I remember reading about Steve Job's reluctance to fit Mac's with Blu-Ray drives. If I got a Blu-Ray drive would it natively be supported in Lion?

Thanks

Stewart

Any drive should work, but it's not a guarantee. However, I plan to try my luck at one of the Samsung externals on offer as they're only £21 compared to Apple's insane amount of £70.

Cant help with blueray but regards other OEM drives, most modern versions should work, the only twist being ability to power them. If rMBP can power them via USB port then they should all work...some older ODDs need dual USB input to provide enough voltage to power them
