Seems that DJI is the undisputed king of the consumer drone world with no legitimate challenger in sight. For many reasons, I'd love to see a challenger emerge but wonder if that will ever happen?

Competition is good for consumers, alarms have been sounded over the likelihood that DJI is channeling data to the Chinese government raising concerns for the government and for privacy-minded private users, and DJI's cheaper drones seem to be prone to connectivity issues (again, competition is good). It's understandable that better features/technology comes with the higher price paid for premium models, but when those features have a direct impact on whether or not your drone/investment randomly crashes, disappears, or hurts someone else or damages property, it's strange that the remedy is "spend more money for the models with better tech."

GoPro made a run at the drone business and it nearly contributed/led to their demise. Would love to see a company with the cash to experiment -- like Apple -- take a run at it and do it really well. Wondered what people smarter/more informed than myself think...is DJI king for the foreseeable future?

I think there are a lot of decent drones on the market nowadays but DJI is definitely the best IMO. I own the Mavic Air and I find it incredibly easy to use and the quality of the video is amazing for the price. Also with DJI entering the action camera market I am worried about GoPros market share falling even more. I own a Hero 4 Black and while its a decent camera I switched to the Yi 4K and 4K+ a couple of years ago and haven't touched the Hero 4 in at least a year. I think you are paying mostly for the name and so on with GoPro. my Yi 4K+ has the same specs internally as the Hero 6 Black and yet its half the price and has a better picture IMO. I find that I have to do more color correction with the GoPros than the Yi. The only thing I can think of that GoPro has over Yi is that they can record in HVEC. Im working on seeing if I can get a DJI action camera to try out and it may make me turn away from the Yi's.
