Since it's an included app, will the apple maps app only get updated when Apple releases iOS updates? With all the threads about how incomplete the app seems at times, it'd be nice if Apple was constantly looking to improve it. I know in the past, included apps couldn't be updated like regular app store apps. Has this changed in iOS 6 at all?

Still only when iOS updates. But you have to remember that the Maps application is a unique thing - they can improve results in the background at any time.

But major potential features, like transit, or street view would have to wait for another iOS release.

It's like the App Store. The data is held on the server side so they can always update it at any time.

That is only 1/2 of the story. If they want to add any new UI or menu choices (say like mass transit directions) that would require a full OS update.
