just recently my 3gs has stopped working, and since the release of the iphone 5 I heard the 3gs is discontinued. is this true? will my warranty replace it with an iphone 4?

They'll give you a 3Gs. They still have those in stock. It won't be a new one, but a refurbished one.

If it's still under AppleCare then they would more than likely replace it with a refurb 3GS

Actually Apple is not fulfilling any orders for the 3GS for Genius Bar replacements...they are upgrading you to the iPhone 4.

Do you have a source for that? Usually they keep stock in and use it for replacements.

All I can say to reply to the above is I work at a "bar" that does this sort of thing everyday......most stores do not have any 3GS in stock for warranty/out of warranty replacement service.
