The iPod hasn’t been refreshed since 2015. Do you think Apple will retire the once uber-popular music device or finally refresh the aging device?

Could go both ways really. On one side, the iPod provides an alternative, cheaper way, to get into the feel of iOS. The iPod touch is also often bought for children who do not really need all the bells and whistles an iPhone has. However, these days most kids carry a smartphone and listen music through that anyway. So being realistic, the iPod probably has had its time, but who knows.

I wish the iPod Nano would make a comeback. Sometimes I just want to have music with me without having a large device like an iPhone or an iPod Touch in my pocket... The 5th Gen Nano was my favorite they ever made. Loved the clip and the little screen.

I miss my 7th (I think it was 7th; the last Nano, anyway) iPod. I really wish I had kept it as it was a purely music device.

I think the Touch has been eclipsed by the SE which can do so much more yet isn't any more expensive. I played around with an iPod Touch the last time I was in the Apple Store and I thought it was a phone at first - it's so featherly light and slim.

It's a shame but I think with storage in phones greatly increased we will never see another Touch. Now would be the time to buy one before they pull the plug, but the 128GB Touch isn't really worth the money and is a bit dated now.

Of course it's dead, but it's such an iconic device... sign of the times, I guess. And no one really needs an iPod if they've got an iPhone, anyway.

I will never forget my first iPods Nano, they were amazing. The 3rd Gen Nano is my fave Apple device EVER!

I've still got a green iPod Shuffle from 2011. The battery on it is still good, too.

It will be retired when the Touch is no longer able to run the latest version of iOS.

Wasn't the SE officially retired recently ?

Yes, but there is plenty of new (old stock available). Now would be the time to buy one of those if it takes your fancy.

As a former Power PC macintosh owner. I purchased a nano player 2 years ago and downloaded the iTune software. I found the iTunes software as the most bloated complex music software l have ever seen. I returned the nano player.

The Nano and Shuffle are no longer available from Apple and any left over stock in stores are rapidly disappearing. The only iPod that you can still buy is the overpriced iPod Touch. As far as I'm concerned, good riddance to the Shuffle whose battery is lucky to last more than a year or two. Almost impossible to replace it. The Nano is a different story, however. I'm sorry to see that one go. I still have two of them and wish I had more.

You can find the Nano player at pawn shops. It is where l brought it and then returned it.

I guess all anyone can really say is there’s a slim chance it could be updated until it officially disappears without a replacement.

The iPod Touch and the iPad Mini will be superseded by the iPad Mini 2 on the 30th of October.

The iPod has been hanging for a long time.
At this point it’s just something the offer it’s not hurting their bottom line.
Does anyone else still make a media player only?

Does media mean music and videos?

If it's just music, there's a whole world of market for music players today and they can cost astronomically high. Even Sony makes a ridiculously priced mp3 player and crazy people buy them for that insane price!

The iPod touch and iPad mini were last updated around the same time (within months) and both have A8 chips. The mini is rumored to be getting an update very soon. I imagine the touch will either also receive an update around the same time or be discontinued—either way, soon, I’m guessing before December. Latest by wwdc 2019. I don’t see Apple selling a device that can’t run their newly announced os.

You mean superseded by the iPad mini 5. iPad mini 2 is very old!

I think the iPod touch will be gone tomorrow so if you want one I would buy it while stocks last. I can’t see the iPod touch getting anymore updates.

We'll have to wait and see what Apple does with the Touch. I personally would never buy one but there are folks who still swear by them. But, I suspect you may be right.

The only thing I love about the 6G is that it’s the cleanest sounding out of all iDevices. I use it as offline personal music player only for that purpose where I ripped most of my CD to ALAC and sync it there. Sadly I don’t see another update coming as the market is now dominated by music streaming services and the iPod touch doesn’t have cellular connectivity for music streaming anywhere

Really? IMO an IPT6 is no match against an iphone SE for example regarding sound quality is far better the later. I know, i know its more expensive but this is Apple. $$.
