Given they are essentially the same device but with Touch ID being the point of difference, there seems no hardware reason why support shouldn't be identical in the future. Anyone know?

I'm planning to pick up a Mini 2 but this might be a factor in the 3's favour.
 
That's an interesting question/point. I'm curious how Apple will treat that, but if mini 3 sales aren't great, my guess is that they'll both have the exact same update lifespan.
