Slightly specific but maybe someone's tried to do this in the past and can elighten me.

I have a Europe-spec (UK-spec? EU-spec? Who knows these days) iPhone XR (model A2105). Not sure about the difference to the US version (A1984), maybe LTE bands?

I should be in NYC on Sept. 20 (ish), right around the next iPhone launch, and iPhones are usually cheaper in the US. I know they'd give me like $10 for my phone but I think it's hassle-free.

Will Apple in the US take my iPhone as a trade-in? Or only back in Europe, since they can't refurb + resell it in the US? My iPhone is fully unlocked, purchased straight from Apple, and I'm not on the IUP (i.e. I fully own this phone).

In my experience, yes.

I've even gotten a white box replacement for a non-U.S. model in a U.S. store, albeit a few years ago. Was told that they try to be prepared to support overseas visitors, so that may not apply to stores not in major population centers/ports of call.

Apple can sell it in the U.S. because network bands are only governed by software. All refurbished iPhones get a new chassis.

Nothing wrong with Apple products from a different region, what they don’t like is obvious fake and counterfeit parts (say from your “local repair shop”)

Actually I have traded in one third party refurbished iPhone 5 before. This thing is full of third party stuff, from screen to battery.

I didn’t have problem with trade in.
