I know the app is available on select brands’ newer TV sets.

I’m just wondering why it’s not just made available in the GooglePlay store for download.
Is there an issue with the app requiring hardware to run properly?

One would think Apple would want this on as many devices as possible (including Android tablets and phablets).

I checked on the Play Store from my ISP's Android box running official Android TV 9 (stock ROM, no root) and it was not there. I intend to set up my Shield 2017 to see if that box has it.

Here you go:

Thanks, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be compatible with my 3 year old Sony Bravia.
Don't know if it's a technical limitation or Sony decided not to allow it on their older models.

I wouldn't be too disappointed. I installed the Apple TV app on my Shield 2017 and was really put off by the amount of judder I saw in the first few minutes of John Wick 3 as the camera panned across the New York skyline. I was not surprised this happened since Android TV does not support auto frame rate switching to match the video source. There was no such judder on my 1st gen Apple TV 4K with auto frame rate enabled.

Was hoping for a cleaner solution, but since the app won't work and no AirPlay on my Sony I may have to HDMI from my iPad then. That or buy a cheap FireStick or drop $200 on an AppleTV set top.
Thanks.

The Firestick 4k is a good solution because it supports auto frame rate and DV.
