I tried to download itunes from itunes.com at the suggestion of a person from Applecare to better enable putting music on a pair of old ipods and found out that it won't run under Ventura.

Does anyone here know if Apple is going to update itunes to run under Ventura? The Applecare person figured they probably would but had no way of knowing. The person and someone at a local cell phone shop that works on ipods said that I should just use a windows computer, that itunes works better on a PC. Unfortunately I have no widows computer. I guess I'm going to have to buy parallels and install Windows in order to use my Apple products. Ironic!

I am finding out that the music app on the new operating systems is more about the Apple music subscription than about managing music files on a computer. It is very perplexing and hard to use compared to iTunes which was already rather difficult to use. Music seems to be one of those apps that does a lot of things without asking thinking that it knows better what you want than you do. It is not even easy to find out where it is storing downloaded music files.

Nobody here would know the answer to that, and wouldn't be able to communicate that to us if they did.

They're stored in exactly the same place that iTunes stores them–your home Music folder.

I would be absolutely staggered if Apple updated iTunes for Ventura! AFAICS there aren't even updates for Big Sur or Monterey, the two major macOS releases since Music, TV and Finder replaced iTunes in Catalina.

Personally I was thankful to see the back of iTunes, and much prefer the more logical setup now.

I suggest forgetting about iTunes and tackle the problems you are having with Music. Music > Settings > Files tab is where you can see the location of your Music media and change it.

Yes, now iTunes runs better on Windows.
But you don’t have to buy Parallels. Try
UTM https://mac.getutm.app or
VirtualBox https://www.virtualbox.org

Thanks for the replies. This all make sense.

So there is another piece of this that I need to deal with. This all started with my needing to convert some iTunes libraries to libraries I can open in Music. I expected music to do this when it sees the iTunes database file with an ".itl" extension in the folder. It is not doing this. I was told that upgrading to Ventura would cause it to do this. The AppleCare person told me I should download iTunes and it would do it. It won't run under Ventura which queered that option. Does anyone know how to get the Music app to convert an iTunes library?

Another question about the Music app. Can I have multiple libraries in the Music app that function similarly to the way they functioned in iTunes? I am going to need to locate those libraries on external drives as I do not have a large enough local drive to hold them. Is this all realistic to expect of the Music app?

It is hard to get information about this from AppleCare where the people I have talked with seem to think the Music app is all about syncing things from an Apple Music subscription (which we don't have because much of the music we want isn't even there and we already have most of what we want from other sources) between devices, the same way Apple uses iCloud to synch other stuff. Even with paying for a higher level of storage, we have nowhere near enough space on iCloud to hold all of our music.

PS -- I did notice that when I create a new library in the Music app, it automatically lists all the few music files I have purchased from Apple in the library, which I guess is OK, though I like to have just the music I want in each library.

Thanks,
