Will Applecare cover screen on PB/iBook if bought used?

I seem to have read somewhere that you can add Applecare to any Apple from <1yr from purchase date, but if you want it to cover your portable screen, you have to add Applecare at the time of original purchase...So Applecare, if added say after an eBay purchase, will cover all BUT the screen.

Any truth to this?
