Will Audio Extractor work with Apple TV 4K 2021?

First I understand I need to update my AVR but it's not in the cards right
right. So I'm running devices into my HDTV via HDMI and then Optical
cable out to my AVR (doesn't have HDMI just Optical). Anyway my old
Apple TV did have an Optical out but just not the new one.


Does anyone have any experience using an Audio Extractor with the new Apple
TV 4K 2021? I did read where one guy said he was using one successfully
until IOS 14.5 broke it. He was going to do further testing to see if it
was for sure 14.5 but he never posted back.

For your usecase, you'd need to set aTV 4K to output PCM Stereo or Dolby Digital 5.1 first, then extracting it to optical would work.
Normally, aTV does not output DD, and PCM5.1 or 7.1 can not be extracted into optical by design.

Thanks for the article I plan on saving it… great explanation on the subject. Since my system can only do 5.1 looks like I would need to set my ATV to Dolby Digital.

Any suggestions on an Audio Extractor that would work with the ATV 4 K and my 1080P TV?

Unfortunately I can not share my personal experiences, as I do not own one. Never did.
But I think any Amazon-recommended will do the job.

I have such experience. ATV 4K 1 gen, which worked perfectly with audio extractor sending HDMI to PJ JVC and audio 5.1 to Parasound processor, stopped working after upgrade to OS 14.7. ATV 4K 2001, purchased a week ago doesn't work with this extractor too. ATV 3 works with extractor just fine. So yes, latest OS might break connectivity with normally working audio extractor. And might not, depending on the brand. I had bad luck to own the one , which lost compatibility with ATV 4K. Now looking for another one, compatible. If anyone has ATV4K with OS 14.7 working OK with extractor, please name the model.
