I plan on using my new MBP with my Sammy 46in HDTV. Is it safe to use clamshell mode or is it better to keep the lid open and drag the tool bar to my HDTV in the arrangements tab under display preferences .

No. If it did, Apple wouldn't gladly explain how to do it on their website, as they'd have to repair more displays under warranty, which would in turn lose them money.

Seeing as Apple is out to make profit in the first place, I strongly doubt you'll damage anything.

Thank you.

You'll be fine. Ignore people who say that it'll damage the screen, or that the keyboard acts as a vent, or anything else.
