I have a Verizon iPhone which was lack connected to my MacBook Pro over a month ago when I had Snow Leopard, before Lion. The iPhone is running 4.2.8 but am aware of a newer version being out.

I would assume I wouldn't want to upgrade to the latest firmware, assuming there isn't a jailbreak for it quite yet...or at least an untethered JB?

I performed a complete erase and reinstall when migrating from SL to Lion, meaning either way upon connecting my iPhone to my MacBook Pro, my iPhone will need to be erased and will have to reinstall all my apps and add my music all over again.

I have no problem having to reinstall all my apps and media, I just don't wanna go without a jailbroken iPhone..

Advice?

No, it will not update it automaticly.
It will pop up a window asking you if you want to update to the latest firmware.
You can click no and check the box dont ask me again.
You can then sync, transfer your music, apps and everything with no probs.

But upon connecting my iPhone 4 onto this newly erased and lion installed machine, won't I be forced to upgrade to continue, considering my current Lion iTunes has never ever been connected with an iPhone?

It will notify you that new firmware is available. You can click cancel and proceed without upgrading.

Next you should click transfer purchases to move all your apps.

Finally you need to re sync all your music, videos, books, photos, etc.

You can re use the same itunes library if you backed it up. Hold option when starting itunes to select the library.

I did back it up, so i'm good there. Concerning the JB itself, it there currently a way to do an untethered JB? Maybe through RedSn0w?
