Right now I'm formatting a Seagate external drive in the format that the MacOS said it needs for a Time Machine backup.

I'm doing a Time Machine backup in preparation for upgrading to High Sierra from Sierra. I chose the secure erase option so it will take a while.

Will disk formatting continue after I close the screen?

Unless you have an external monitor, closing the screen would put your macbook to sleep and the operation will pause.

Darn. Thanks!

Will it continue if I leave the lid up but after my screen goes blank?

That would depend on your "Energy Saver" settings, the operation will continue after the "Display Sleep" delay but will pause after the "Computer Sleep" delay.

Thank you so much Gimnet1 !

I just checked

"Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when display is off"
"Enable PowerNap when plugged into a power adapter"

and unchecked

"Put hard disks to sleep when possible"

in Energy Saver setting
