Will Firewire 400 to 800 cable work?

I have a Lacie hard drive with Firewire 400 ports but no 800.

I just got one of the new MacBook Pros that only has Firewire 800.

Will it work to simply get a cord with one of each adapters to connect them to each other? Or do I need something like this:

an adaptor would work perfectly no need to buy a change over cord, and its cheap!

That adapter would probably work, but it's $15. You can get a 9-pin to 6-pin or 4-pin firewire cable for $5 on monoprice.com. Plus firewire adapters can be funky when used with video cameras and susceptible to static shock.

Agreed. So to the OP, either will work- a 2 piece solution using your existing cable plus a $15 adapter or a single piece solution FW400-800 cable for $5.
