The gift cards put credit on your iTunes account, and the App Store will use said credit. If it isn't working, contact Apple, or disable your credit card in your iTunes account.

They don't??!??! That's pretty bad since the display in the apple store says you can download the entertainment of your choice. Weird. Glad I read this before buying one though.
