I have a Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa pre-unibody that I did just that with and it works fine

With how cheap RAM is, why not jut get 8GB?

i would buy one 4gb card to replace one of the 2gb cards in it, so 2+4=6
there are good 4gb cards on newegg for around $40
Oh. That's a good idea. I'll probably do that too, but I'm afraid of installing it :/
If you have a 2011 MacBook Pro, you're better off going to 8GB over 6GB for a couple of reasons. Besides the fact that it would be more RAM, the motherboard uses dual-channel RAM, meaning it works best when installed in pairs. So to matched sticks are better than two mismatched (i.e., 1 2GB, 1 4GB) sticks.
