I presently have a 2016 15 inch MBP. It has a 1 TB hard drive, 16 gb of ram and the 2.9 Intel Core i7 processor with the HD Graphics 530 graphic.

I do a lot of photography work with large files from a Nikon D850 - using Lightroom and Photoshop. If I save as layers or merge photos the size of the files gets quite large.

While using these app I usually have a few other apps open, but they are mail and brower.

Would I see much of an improvement if I buy a new MBP, one with 32 gb, the 1 tb ssd, the 2.9GHz 6‑core i9 processor? I know this is subjective but try not to let your own prejudices cloud your advise too much.

TIA.

So this is a two part answer.

Yes, you’ll see a slight improvement indeed when doing your photo editing, especially on the processing of edits, like if you use batch edit features of adobe or other apps.

Is it significant enough to upgrade, personally, No. You already have a quad-core with 16gb of RAM. You might shave a slim amount of processing time off with 6 core processor on these new machines, but if you’re not multitasking that much as you have stated, I don’t see there being a huge incentive to trade up yet.

Personally, I’d wait two more years until your out of the keyboard replacement program to upgrade. That gives these new gen of 6 core Macbook Pros time to go through their growing pains and any possible design issues that come with that, then upgrade in 2020.

Agree. If you only use photoshop you don't need to upgrade the machine for now. But if you also do video editing, after effect or something like that you might need the upgrade.

When waiting for a year or two, wouldn't he get a lesser value if he sold today? I know that in my market, selling a 3 year old Apple reduces the selling price far, far more than selling a 1 year-2 year old Apple.
