I'm having a battery issue and the Apple genius said it's with core apps like Safari. He said I should backup to icloud and then restore phone as "new" and not from my iTunes computer backup of my iPhone. Once phone is restored, the sync to icloud and install my software manually. I asked him if I would loose my saves in my game. He said no. Just do a backup to icloud before I do a clean restore.
BUT I remember when iCloud first Came out, you lost all your save data. Did apple fix icloud to backup game data that's stored on the phone? Some games don't say if it supports icloud backup. Some do. Those that don't, I'll loose my saved game?

I don't want do format my phone if there's a chance I'll loose my saved games.

Restoring from an iCloud backup is the same as restoring from iTunes, just over the air and likelyl more recent. The Genius didn't give you the best advice. What he should have told you (I'm guessing) is to restore your device as new and not restore for any backup, just sign into iCloud and sync contacts, notes, etc. You will lose any game saves that are not stored in the developer's servers and any texts. Your apps will be downloaded fresh from the App Store. This is Apple's go-to method to remove a software problem.

Ok that's the part that scares me. I don't want to loose my game saves. I don't know what saves to icloud and what only stores the saves on the phone.

The way the genius made it sound as everything including the save files is sent to the cloud as a backup. And if I restore from the iCloud (I know the app isn't stored in the cloud) it'll dload the game and dload from the cloud the saved data from the phone.

Yeah not all games save to the cloud. I play the My Little Pony game, and any reset without restoring from a backup will lose my progress, and the only thing Gamelofy can think to do is give you a bunch of game currency to rebuy what you bought. Good luck!

Aww hell. My daughter has that game on my iPhone. (lv70) Aww shoot. now what to do...

Let her finish the game ;)

But here's a question: which iPhone do you have? If you have an iPhone 5, check and see if you qualify for the battery replacement program here: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/. If not, there are settings you can change to somewhat improve battery life like turning off background app refresh and location settings that may not be necessary. You could also consider getting an iPod touch or iPad mini to backup the games on and then reset your iPhone fresh so it will work better for you. Unfortunately I can't think of any way to fix the problem and save the games on the iPhone :(

lol. Mine is the 5s. They said the battery is still at 100% but he saw some issues with Safari/contacts/and something else. That made him think that factory settings would help.

That seems weird for a year old phone. Unfortunately I don't know what to suggest other than a factory reset either. You'll lose game saves, and there's only a chance the issue will be resolved :(
