iPhone Will iOS 13 make or break your next iPhone decision?

Just curious, since iOS 13 is being hyped up by many as a very anticipated update, is there anyone out there that is actually using Monday’s announcement as a “make or break” about whether to change to or from an iPhone?

I know there will be the die-hards that answer “pshhh, it’s a tool, it’s just software, etc” that’s fine. But in my small circle of friends, this announcement has been hinted by some as a “last chance” for Apple.

If this ends up being the same static icons, the same dumb Siri, the same volume UI and phone calls taking up the entire screen, etc. will it be enough to cause you to jump ship to an iPhone? (Or stay on android if you’re using iOS 13 as a way to jump into an iPhone possibly)

Does it not matter? You’re ingrained in the Apple ecosystem or you don’t trust Google’s privacy or you just simply don’t like Android? Maybe iOS 13 can literally be iOS 12 with dark mode and that’s enough because you love iOS, that’s fine.

Can’t wait to download iOS 13 on my Xs Max, been waiting awhile for dark mode.

I will decide in September whether to upgrade to the 11 max or stay with the Xs Max. Don’t really have a reason to switch to another platform.

I prefer the Apple ecosystem. Even if no changes are made visually, I'll still stay with Apple for now.

iOS 13 will run fine on my current XS. Hardware updates, primarily longer battery life, will be the deciding factor if I upgrade to iPhone XI or not.

iOS 13 is geared for iPad. It’s been know for a while now. iPhone users who are expecting major improvements besides dark mode and tweaks to iMessage, Health, and Screen Time are going to be sorely disappointed.

Even though I have iPhone XS Max, I still remain skeptical about this iOS 13 thing. Coolness won’t help me getting the job done, and inconsistency between dark mode and light mode will hurt eyes much more than pure white or pure dark. Simple. I can only hope Apple having a consistent system display mode across the board, and still have no idea why they only introduce dark mode on Apple Watch app?
About the iPhone decision? Not at all. I have decided to cut off at A12 era and hold another 5 years before moving forward. iPhone 11 may likely be not supported by iTunes 12.6.5.3, which is a huge deal breaker for me.

Those minor annoyances you mention (volume, full screen calls, static icons, etc) don't weigh as much as the unpolished feel of Android and its 3rd party apps for me. Both OS's have their advantages and disadvantages. When you switch to Android, in the beginning you will love all the little differences, but after a while you might miss all the small things that the iPhone has but Android phones don't. Especially when you have other Apple products like a MacBook and Apple Watch. And obviously just the entire look and feel of apps.

I used to be a graphic designer and I really can't stand the huge inconsistencies in Android and especially the bad design of many 3rd party apps. Also the animations are too linear and don't feel as natural as on iOS. Even something small as the lack of rubber band scrolling is something I miss on Android. It's really the same difference between Windows and macOS. One is very customisable but feels unpolished, the other is more closed but has great integration and consistent design (I know, there are also inconsistencies, but far less than on Android / Windows).

I spend 99% of my time in apps, as long as the OS lets me do what I need and supports the latest features then its good enough for me.

I don’t get people that want an entire redesign for the sake of it.

I've had problems with the XS Max that I've never had with any other iPhone...ever....and it's because of the Intel modem.

I'm looking forward to iOS 13, but I never viewed it as potentially revolutionary...just different enough to call it iOS 13.

I don't see how there's much wrong with Apple that we're talking about giving them chances.

But what do I know. I'm just one dumb old man.

In the smartphone world, I do wonder about the next generation Apple iPhone processors. I've seen some speculation about the Cortex A77, and I think that there's a chance that Android phones will get close to what we have right now with the A12 and A12X.

But you never know what Apple's got on the horizon.

Anyway, no, I never thought iOS 13 would be revolutionary, nor am I looking for any make-or-break features.

Nope. I just came back an iPhone XS after 3 months with a Galaxy S10e. *LITERALLY* the only thing I liked about the S10e above the XS, when it comes down to it, is dark mode....but it's not THAT big of a deal if it's not just like I want it.

iOS has evolved IMMENSELY in the last 5 years. If your measure of innovation and progress is UI change for changes sake, iOS might not be the best platform for you. The underlying technologies are so incredibly better.

I absolutely agree. My XS Max is the worst iPhone I have owned in regards to signal strength. I barely get 2 bars of signal at home, and even with WiFi calling turned on, I phone rarely rings. Not to mention when that when my phone switches from LTE to 3G (because why wouldn’t it do so randomly) calls drop immediately. Also, something as basic as switching WiFi networks causes my cell signal to disappear all together, and I have to use airplane mode to get it back.

I’ve half a mind to pick up an iPhone X with the Qualcomm modem in it or switch to Android. It’s that annoying.

Yes. What’s actually helping people out are features and changes that helping people to meet their need, not playing around the iOS to see if one icon can be moved to another place or not. Stale UI actually helps me to know exactly where I should tap to launch the app I need right now.

I think this is the point. If things didn't work it would need more drastic changes, but it does 98% of what 98% of people want it to do to "make it different" because it's boring is not solving people's problems.

I think the iPhone and iOS on the iPhone are fairly mature devices where drastic change is not in their best interest. However, iOS on the iPad has a long way to go and I could see Apple focusing heavily on the iPad this year and even into next year's updates to really push what an iPad can do.

Does the iPhone get some nice to haves along the way? Maybe? But I see them experimenting more with the iPad over the next several iterations of iOS.

Possibly. I’m sticking with my iPhone XR for at least 2 years so ios14 will probably be more important for me. I’ll be very disappointed though.

Yes, my iOS storage is filling up with "other" space -- System is 251 GB on the 256G iPhone 8 Plus model. Apple support cannot fix this. If they don't fix this in 13 then I will have to switch to another OS phone. I'm a customer since 1985.

Nope. I will definitely get a new iPhone after the 2019 models are announced - it just depends on what it announced whether I go with an XS or the 2019 model. My X has served me flawlessly but the battery will be on its way out by then.

iOS is pretty much perfect as is, so unless it's another iOS 11 debacle it will be fine.

Over the past few weeks, I've seen many comments floating around. Comments such as "If iOS 13 turns out to be a boring update, I'll definitely switch to Android." Honestly, I don't understand these people. And I'm not gonna try to, because I don't even think half of those people are serious about it.

To me, the whole Apple ecosystem alone has always kept me from switching. The way everything works together, it's just almost flawless. And yes, I say 'almost'. It has had its issues. But so has virtually anything that is software or hardware based. Nothing is perfect, and Apple is certainly no exception. However, it's good enough to prevent me from switching.

New features are always welcome. However, I liked the whole thing about iOS 12. Not a breakthrough update, but it was a necessary one. I hope Apple has learned. I hope they've learned not to mess things up with iOS 13. And that, honestly, is what I am more afraid of then not getting features such as dark mode and all. Why? Because so far I've always managed to live without. I can't live without a well-functioning device, though.

If iOS 13 messes everything up, in terms of performance, battery life as well as existing features etc... Then yes, it could definitely break my next iPhone decision. But when it comes to new features, as most people are talking about, then no.

Anyway, I look forward to next Monday. Of course I'm hoping for a lot new features, as long as they add up to offering a great, flawless experience.

Could not agree more. I switched to an S10e a few months ago due to a huge $550 trade-in value.

I switched back to an XS a week ago. The reception was nice, but that was about it. The OS has come along way but is still nowhere near as cohesive as iOS is, and I constantly had phone restarts, dropped calls, app crashes, and finally my phone got bricked last week due to an update - something that NEVER happened to any iPhone I owned between 2010-2019.
