no, the 3g is not capable of reaching 7.2 due to hardware constraint. the 3gs is the only model iphone built with a 7.2 3g card.
depending on where you live and where 7.2 3g coverage is will depend on your increase in speed. out here in houston it is much more noticeable then say new york.
