The iPhone 3G is thinner so it won't fit.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: Sry i like that smiley.

Seems to me that if something is smaller, it WILL fit!

The question becomes:
"How well does it fit?"
"Does it move around or is it tight enough?"
"Does that little extra thickness in the back prevent it from fitting?"

Seems to me that the answer to all of these will depend on the material. Hard plastic cases are probably a lost cause. Things with give, like some rubber and perhaps leather cases, might still work.

There's no way to know until people try, but I'll bet anything that SOME old iPhone cases will continue to work "well enough."

I think the Cases won't fit because of the rounded edges of the iPhone 3G. Although some cases will fit, they would not fit as snuggly as one might want. It really depends, it is hard to speculate without the unit at hand ;)

There seems to be a common misconception that the iPhone 3G is thinner than the original model.

iPhone version 1 measurements:
Height:
115.0 mm
Width:
61.0 mm
Depth:
11.6 mm

iPhone 3G measurements:
Height:
115.5 mm
Width:
62.1 mm
Depth:
12.3 mm

Unless I'm missing something, the iPhone 3G is marginally thicker, not thinner than the original model.

The only reason it looks thinner is because it does get thinner towards the top and bottom...but yeah, at the thickest point it's quite a bit thicker than the original. I'd think the shape of the back would also warrant an immediate "no" about using a 1st gen iPhone cover.

Its the wrong shape so it wont fit, unless you have a rubber or leather case. Hard Plastic wont fit.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

This is an excellent post - thanks for those mm dimensions!

I just got a rubber iSkin Revo case and since it's flexible rubber I hope it will work with the 3G but guess we'll have to wait and see.
