Im 16 and im buying a new laptop. I was going to build a desktop but I need it to be portable. I have about 1000$ now, getting 100$ this friday. and hopefully if i get good hours with my job, ill have 1400$ by the beginning of november. I will probably get over 100$ for xmas. so i pretty much plan on buying a laptop that costs around 1500$ around February.

it needs to have...
-4GB DDR2 RAM
-NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS 512GB
-160GB 7200 RPM HDD
-Core 2 Duo 2.5 GHz
-17" 1920 x 1200 display
-blu-ray drive

originally i was planning on getting a Mac Pro,

mac pro specs
-2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
-4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x2GB
-200GB Serial ATA @ 7200 rpm
-SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
-MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Glossy Widescreen Display

but the price was... gulp... $3,149 and apple is still using GeForce 8600M GT gfx cards.

then i stumbled into this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220346
slightly better specs and costs only $1,550

the only problem with that laptop is, it had no blu-ray drive.

can I probably a similar computer only with a blu-ray drive and maby even dual gfx cards for 1550$ in 5 months?

Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 are coming out, i need to be ready ;)

New Apple machines will not drop in price. Used computers depreciate and refurbished will be cheaper, but depends on spec.

And you won't be getting those specs at that price for a long time.

Maybe!

sorry chief but it ain't gonna happen. At your price range your looking at either a base MBP 15" or a high end Macbook. 17" is definatly out of the question, let alone high resolution. and don't even get everyone started about blu ray.

Maybe if you save up a little more you can get a refurbished 17" MBP but it's not gonna have the specs you want.

realistically though if you only want to game on this i would just go with the Dell XPS 1730 or the Asus you pointed out because theres no sense in buying a Mac just to load windows on it for games, when there are far better gaming options out there.

just to let u know
asus laptop monitors
are by far the glossiest thing iv ever seen
ull even be looking at urself on white screens!
they are literally like mirrors

True but both SC & Diablo will come out on Mac/PC simultaneously as w/ all Blizzard games these days.

Out of curiosity, why do you need a Blu Ray drive?

Like others said, you are better off getting a desktop, if you are looking for those specifications at that price.

I'd say its the ol' "need/want" issue. Some people just have to have it because its out there when it comes to specs. Whether they'll ever put those 'specs' to maximum use is a whole other story.

That price and that configuration doesn't go hand-in-hand! Not in January '09 at least!

get an HDMI cable and watch blu ray movies on my TVs
a blu ray player is a lot more expensive than a blu ray drive since a blu ray player has a high end gfx card built in.

another thing, if starcraft 2 doesnt come out in 5 months then im not buying a computer until it does. it might come out in 8 or 9 months.

and then ill just buy a mac mini later cause... i really want to get a mac, I dont know why, just want one.

Based on the last post, it sounds like you're spending money for the sake of spending money. Dumb. Start a Roth IRA, nontaxable growth, and STILL nontaxable when you take it out in 50 years. I started one a few years back, and it's already doing very well.

Also, you don't want dual graphics cards in a laptop. SLI performance sucks because Nvidia doesn't touch the drivers. I would wait for SC2 and D3 to get release dates before you buy anything - if you need to buy something. No sense in buying something now that could be a year old when your game comes out.
