My 2010 MacBook pro (4gb ram) running snow leopard has been running fairly slow over the past few months..I have a lot of stuff running but the performance has definitely taken a hit compared to speed a year ago for example... Ran disk utility cleanup/etc with no help...

Coming from a pc I thought macs would handle time better but it seems to be exactly the same... Seems like a fresh start might help...will installing lion help with speed/etc?

More RAM may help as well; I just upgraded my mid-2009 MBP to 8GB today and the difference has been quite noticeable.

Macs don't slow down over time, usually its the users that start using more/more demanding stuff on their computers.

What do your page ins and page outs look like? You might simply be running out of RAM.
