Hey guys, I'm taking a course that deals with 3D at school this semester, and was wondering about the just released MacBook Air.

My current laptop is much older (from 2006, White MacBook) and I was wondering if this new system could handle Maya.

It'll run better on the Air than on the MacBook you currently own. If you're doing a specific 3D design course, you might want to look elsewhere, unless you've got a powerful desktop at home you can do the real work on.

The Air categorically isn't a workstation.

Right, I have a Mac Pro at home ... so I'm wondering if this will be enough to do a few things in class if needed. If there's unbearable lag or terrible battery life, then I might just not even bother.

Honestly, my current MacBook won't even run Lion so I'm already thinking about upgrading.

Why not get it, install Maya, and if you find it's not suitable, return it within the 14 day return period?

The problem you'll have isn't with the Macbook Air, but with Lion. Autodesk has a statement on Lion compatibility here, and it's not good.

Keep in mind you cannot run any operating system before Lion on the 2011 Macbook Air.

Also, if your old MacBook is a 2006 Core Duo model, it won't run Maya 2012 at all, as it seems to require a 64-bit processor.
