Will my girlfriend lose all her texts?

Here's the story: my girlfriend's been using an O2 PAYG sim in an iPhone 2G that her dad gave her when he upgraded to a 3G. Tomorrow, she's getting a new monthly contract sim card from O2 (simplicity I think it's called?). She wants to know if she will lose all her texts in her inbox. Are the SMSs tied to the SIM or the iPhone?

I believe the texts are stored on the phone, not the SIM.

They're saved on the phone.

Also if you backup the phone they're stored in the backup so you could get a whole new phone, restore from backup and still have the texts.
