The new power management tools in Mavericks are great- both the list of apps in the battery menu, and the Energy tab in Activity Monitor. There are a few apps that I used to keep open because I assumed they used minimal energy, but have recently discovered that they might be impacting battery significantly. Spotify (10% CPU while not playing music) and Skype are the biggest unnecessary consumers on my machine.

Developers might take notice if their apps are consistently in the battery menu list; I am going to file bug reports on a couple of offenders eventually to help this process along. Apps that sit idle, doing little to nothing but taking CPU time really bug me, as they add up. Perhaps we can expect improvements from some of these poorly written apps?

What apps do you find are the worst consumers of battery?
