You might have a problem with OS X, I know when I got my old MBP repaired and the motherboard was changed I needed to reinstall OS X. Since the new MBP has entirely different internals I would not recommend it.
However, you could try put in the drive and do an archive and install of OS X, which should keep all your data. NOTE: some applications like Adobe CS need to be reinstall after this.
As for software update, I don't think you will even get to that point safely, also the new system info is probably only on the included recovery disks at this point.
