I am going to set my senior mom up with an iPhone this holiday. She has an LG flip phone with Consumers Cellular that does texting, and maybe some e-mail. Not sure about the e-mail. She would stay with Consumers for service which would work for her as a minimum sort of data user, probably use very little data beyond e-mail. Is a 4G or LTE SIM card different or would her current SIM work in a iPhone 7? What about form factor? I know she would have to upgrade her account to get data.

It will PROBABLY work depending on how old the SIM card is. But even if it does, you'd likely have to cut the card to fit in the iPhone, chances are the SIM in the flip phone is not nanoSIM sized.

Since you have to call in or go to a store to upgrade the account for data anyway, I would just ask Consumer Cellular to give you a new nanoSIM card for the same account. It will be more seamless and I'm assuming free since they're giving away SIM cards for free on their website.

I was suspecting the nano format is newer than her old flip phone. Thanks.

Without knowing the exact model of the flip phone, I can't say for sure that it's not a nanoSIM... but based on how old a typical flip is, it's pretty unlikely that it would be a nanoSIM.
