Currently switching over from 5 years on Android, wanting to get my first iPhone. My only reservation is I can't find a fully unlocked iPhone, I assume those don't exist? I want to be able to buy the phone in full and take it to Straight Talk, AT&T compatible. Can I just buy the phone outright from AT&T and pop in the the Straight Talk SIM card without issue?

None where I live, online I can only select from carriers or am I missing something?
Full price phone from Apple, no matter what carrier, is unlocked out of box, including the AT&T one.

If you want to be double-safe, the Verizon and T-Mobile ones are unlocked on the carrier end, too, they just lack Band 30.

Seems impossible to buy from them without having an account through one of those carriers. Immediately asks for your wireless number and checks with the carrier to see if its through them. I guess without visiting the store directly there's no way?

From what I know is that you need an wireless account with one of the carriers in order to purchase the phone currently at apple.com with the exception of T-Mobile. But if you purchase t-mobile phone outright from the apple.com it should be unlocked out of the box.

T-mobile is a GSM phone but of course doesn't have the band 30. Not sure that matters if you plan on using it on ST. But it should still work on that network.'

Ah I forgot about that. Yeah, unfortunately you'd have to buy it at a retail location.
