Or does it become totally bricked until it gets back in contact with its iphone?

I don't recall hearing or seeing a single mention of what it CAN do without an iphone connection.

Should at least tell time.

I get the impression the whole "OMG!1!1!!1! 50 MILLISECONDS!1!!1!!1!!" is simply the fact that the watch is slaved to the phone which itself is slaved to the network and that network probably gets its time from one of the various .gov atomic clocks.

for fitness use, I should hope it's like the nike fuel band where it doesn't need the phone as it stores calorie information and syncs when you press the button.

for calls/music/siri, i think you might need the phone.
